This week's Activity:

How important is good writing to you? In an ideal world, a book would be beautifully written AND have great character development, plot, etc. But in the real world, which do you prefer: (1) Great characters and plot with lousy writing or (2) Middling character development and plot but gorgeous writing

Well, I would love great characters and plot with gorgeous writing. But since this is a question of Or not And, I think I'd settle with great characters and plot despite having lousy writing. There are actually lots of authors published by publishers whose writing are boring. I'd like to give as an example Thomas Sniegoski's Fallen series. It's not that he's lousy. Since he's marketed by publishers, you won't find errors in his sentence structures and grammar. It's just that the way he narrates simply bores me but the story is so nice and intriguing, I was compelled to finish it.

On the other hand, I really love Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. The writing is simply gorgeous. At first, I'd love to complain how her paragraphs are bombarded with too much flowery words but these flowery words are the reason why my emotions are thrown to a height. Despite the flat celluloid characters Twilight has, I couldn't deny I was taken so much by it.

  3. Yeah to me the characters and all the worldbuilding, etc, comes before writing. I can't be interested in a well written book if the story or characters don't even make me want to pick it up.

    Here's my Follow Friday

  4. I agree. Although I believe the way of narrating carries almost everything in the book, sometimes all it takes is a good plot to become a good read.

  10. I went with middling characters with strong writing. I struggled with my response because really comes down to how you define lousy and middling and gorgeous!

  11. Hi! New follower here. I love this Friday's topic. I also prefer great characters and plot, for some funny reason, I can overlook mild spelling mistakes and flat writing.

  21. How funny--I think we actually are opposites on the Twilight issue. Not a hater here--a fan, really. I don't enjoy the writing, though--just the characters and story. :)
